Choose an El Alto airport transfer that fits your arrival time, luggage and La Paz neighborhood
Compare taxi, airport minibus and Mi Teleférico connections from El Alto airport to Centro, Sopocachi and Zona Sur.

For most first arrivals, the practical choice is a prearranged transfer or an official taxi from outside arrivals. It is the only option here that takes you directly to an address in Centro, Sopocachi or Zona Sur without changing vehicles.
The airport minibus is the useful budget alternative when you arrive in daylight, carry little and its route matches your accommodation. Mi Teleférico can be part of the journey, but it is not an airport shuttle: you first need a road transfer across El Alto to the Línea Morada terminal.
The quick choice
| Your situation | Practical choice |
|---|---|
| First visit, large bag, family group or arrival after dark | Official airport taxi or prearranged transfer |
| Daylight arrival, small bag, stay near San Francisco, Mercado Lanza or Plaza Isabel la Católica | Airport minibus, after confirming the stop |
| Light luggage and a destination convenient for central La Paz | Taxi or minibus to 6 de Marzo, then Línea Morada |
| Stay in Calacoto, San Miguel or elsewhere in Zona Sur | Direct taxi or prearranged transfer |
| Stay in El Alto | Taxi directly to the address; do not descend into La Paz first |
Taxi: the straightforward default
Official taxis wait outside the arrivals hall, according to an airport transport reference. If you are unsure which queue to use, ask airport staff rather than accepting an unsolicited offer inside the terminal.
Confirm the destination and total fare before loading the bags. A guide updated on 26 October 2026 gives a reference range of Bs 60–90 for Centro or Zona Sur and 20–40 minutes to central La Paz, depending on traffic. It identifies the Cotranstur taxi rank immediately outside arrivals (airport transfer details). Treat those figures as estimates, not a fixed tariff; ask specifically for a Zona Sur quote if you are going to Calacoto or San Miguel.
There is good reason to choose the vehicle carefully. UK government travel advice reports robberies involving taxis in La Paz. It recommends established companies, registered vehicles and an empty taxi rather than one already carrying passengers; for a radio taxi, it advises ordering by phone (FCDO Bolivia safety advice). A transfer arranged by your accommodation is therefore a reasonable choice for a solo or late-night arrival.
Give the driver the property name, street address and neighborhood. Save a map pin offline as a backup.
Airport minibus: only when the route fits
The airport service commonly identified as COTRANSTUR Línea 212 runs from the parking area toward central La Paz. The same October 2026 airport guide lists stops including Cementerio, Mercado Lanza/Plaza San Francisco and Plaza Isabel la Católica, with a reference fare of Bs 4–5 and a journey of about 45 minutes (route and fare details).
Before boarding, ask the driver to confirm:
- whether the vehicle reaches your intended stop;
- the fare and any charge for a large bag;
- where you should get off.
This works best with a small bag and accommodation close to a known stop. It is less useful for Zona Sur, where the cheap first ride leaves a substantial second stage. Do not plan around a late-night or early-morning minibus unless your accommodation has confirmed the current service.
Mi Teleférico: a connection, not an airport pickup
El Alto airport has no cable-car station. The 6 de Marzo terminal of Línea Morada is about 2.5 km away, requiring a taxi or minibus from the terminal (6 de Marzo station reference). That extra road leg is why the cable car is rarely the easiest first-arrival option.
From 6 de Marzo, Línea Morada runs through Faro Murillo to San José, also known as the Obelisco station area, in central La Paz. The independent route guide gives a journey of about 16 minutes, a normal fare of Bs 3 and Bs 2 for a transfer to another line. It lists regular hours of 06:30–22:30 and shorter public-holiday hours, but maintenance can close a line (Línea Morada route and service details). Check Mi Teleférico’s official notices on the day rather than treating those hours as guaranteed.
Choose this combination when:
- you arrive in daylight and can manage the El Alto road connection;
- your luggage is easy to move between vehicles and station gates;
- the San José/Obelisco area or a cable-car interchange suits your destination;
- you accept that another walk or taxi may still be needed.
For Sopocachi—and especially Zona Sur—the remaining connection can erase much of the convenience.
Match the transfer to your neighborhood
Centro, San Francisco and Mercado de las Brujas
A direct taxi is simplest. The minibus can be practical if the driver confirms Mercado Lanza or San Francisco and the final walk is short. Línea Morada reaches central La Paz only after the transfer to 6 de Marzo.
Sopocachi
Use a direct taxi for an unfamiliar address, a suitcase or a night arrival. The minibus may suit accommodation near Plaza Isabel la Católica, but Sopocachi spreads across steep streets: check the final walking route, not just the neighborhood name.
Calacoto, San Miguel and Zona Sur
Take a direct taxi or prearranged transfer. Both the airport minibus’s central stops and Línea Morada leave another cross-city stage. Ask for a quote to the exact Zona Sur address rather than applying a Centro estimate.
Allow for altitude and road disruption
The transfer is also your first hour at high altitude. The CDC places La Paz at approximately 3,650 m and says acute acclimatization takes about three to five days. It advises only mild exercise and no alcohol during the first 48 hours (CDC Yellow Book). Move slowly and avoid building a strenuous luggage haul into the cheapest route.
Demonstrations and blockades can disrupt roads to and from airports at short notice. The FCDO advises monitoring local information, allowing extra time and never attempting to cross a blockade (Bolivia transport advice). If disruption is reported, ask your accommodation and airline about current conditions rather than relying on a normal journey estimate.
Before flying, save your accommodation’s full address and contact number and decide on a fallback. For most visitors, that fallback is simple: use an official airport taxi if the minibus route is unclear, you feel unwell or the cable-car connection looks cumbersome.
